Persian rugs are among some of the most popular area rugs. However, did you know that there are multiple kinds of Persian rugs? One of the most prominent is the “Gabbeh” rug. Originally manufactured by the Persian people as a shaggy rug intended for sleeping, these rugs are traditionally easy to weave, making them a popular style among Native Persian weavers to produce while providing a reasonable living for their families.
The Makings of a Gabbeh Rug
The base of Gabbeh rugs is primarily wool, which has been dyed using natural pigments. While men of the Gabbeh manufacturing villages typically manage the herd and shear the sheep, either men or women can take on the roll of spinning yarn for rug weaving.
Today, most villages have reverted to utilizing natural dyes to infuse color in their wool yarn, taking advantage of the pigment given off from fruits, like pomegranates. In the late 19th and early 20th century, however, there was an onslaught of use of chemical dyes which resulted in a reduced quality of weaving materials and poisoning the groundwater of native villages taking part in Gabbeh weaving.
The Look of Gabbehs
Gabbeh rugs are long, coarser pile rugs that lent comfort for sleeping; and now use in the home. While most exhibit vibrant colors, some less common styles use undyed wool for natural, more subdued tones of tan and brown.
Designs range from intricate geometric shapes, to simple shapes throughout the rug.
With professional cleaning, Gabbeh wool rugs can outlast synthetic fiber rugs, making them well woth the investment. Select Floor Care boasts Nevada County’s only certified rug cleaning technician and utilizes the industry-standard wet wash process in our full service rug cleaning facility located on Loma Rica Drive in Grass Valley.
Do you have a Gabbeh? Think you might? Give us a call today and we can help you learn more about the origin of your Persian rug.
The History of Navajo Rugs
Posted: December 19, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »
Native Americans have long been recognized for their unique art forms. Hand woven baskets and ornate headdresses are closely associated with many tribes, but did you know that the Navajo nation produced rugs? Some of which Select Floor Care is still cleaning today!
The History of Navajo Rugs
According to historians, the Navajo people were likely introduced to the art of weaving by the Pueblo Indians who had in turn been taught by the Spanish. However, Navajo weaving goes far beyond threading fibers within a loom. In fact, the Navajo people have strived to preserve the purity of their art form by resisting modern influences. For example, Navajo women who weave rugs and blankets oversee the operation from start to finish, including raising their sheep, shearing, spinning and dying their own wool.
Traditionally, Navajo rugs are crafted on a crude loom constructed of wooden poles selected by the artisan herself. The rug is woven from the bottom up, with no pre-set pattern or size and each rug being a truly unique, one-of-a-kind piece.
While early weavings were utilized as blankets and clothing for the Navajo people, by 1890 there was no real demand for Navajo weavings as textiles. However, traders began to recognize that an outside market existed for weavings creates as rugs, rather than blankets. With the Santa Fe railroad running along the Southern edge of the Navajo Nation, tourists and missionaries were able to easily access and purchase Navajo rugs. In 1869, C.N. Gallup, a trader based in New Mexico, published a catalog of Navajo rugs for sale to people throughout the country. Today, many Navajo rug styles are referred to by the trading post the influenced their style due to customer demand and person tastes of the traders.
The Spiritual Significance of Navajo Weaving
Unlike historians, who credit the Pueblo Indians with introducing the Navajo Nation to weaving, the Navajo people give credit to a divine spirit for teaching them this craft. As the legend goes, Spider Man taught the people to weave, using spider web as the warp of the loom and a sky-cord and sun halo as the crosspoles. For the Navajo Nation, rug and blanket weaving is a spiritual craft paying homage to Spider Man.
Symbols in Navajo Weaving
It should be no surprise that the patterns and colors in Navajo rug weavings hold special significance. For example:
• White represents morning light of the Eastern sky
• Yellow or Brown represent the sunset of the Western sky
• Red represents the light of the sun
• Grey stands for the clouds of the Southern sky
• Black represents the Northern sky
Navajo rugs are a well constructed and durable piece of art that is prominent in homes, cabins and lodges to this very day. Here at Select Floor Care, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to clean this selection of Navajo rugs recently. With a highly educated and well-trained team of floor care specialists, Select Floor Care is here to help restore and clean your Navajo rugs!
4 Tips for Heirloom Rug Care
Posted: December 5, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: grass valley rug cleaner, heirloom rug care, heirloom rug cleaning, nevada city rug cleaning, nevada county rug cleaner, penn valley rug cleaning, truckee rug cleaner Leave a comment »Often, our clients will come to us with an heirloom rug. Rather than having a piece they’ve purchased themselves, they present a rug that has been passed down through generations and has truly become a family heirloom.
But what if the house you’re currently in doesn’t have a space where that rug fits? Or what if you’re just too scared to place the rug on your floor for use? Never fear, we have some helpful heirloom rug care tips!
If you’ll be using the rug in your home:
1. Call Select Floor Care and schedule a cleaning. Our knowledgeable rug cleaning technicians, will clean and restore the rug to its best possible condition, as well as help you identify the rug and learn more about its origins and proper care.
2. Place the rug in a low-traffic area. While your heirloom rug may be beautiful and suitable for light use, it’s probably not up to the task of handling all day wear and tear from the dog, muddy kid shoes and your stilettos.
3. Resist the urge to take an restorative measures yourself. If you notice your heirloom rug begin to fray or snag, call Select Floor Care and allow us to refer you to a professional who can help. Cutting rug fringe, or repairing backing flaws yourself can lead to the rug being completely destroyed. And that’s not what Grandma wanted!
If you’ll be storing the rug for awhile:
1. Store the rug in a temperature and humidity controlled environment. The extreme heat of the attic, or damp darkness of the basement can lead to a breakdown of the rug’s foundational materials or allow mold and mildew to grow in the rug fibers.
2. Avoid folding your rug. Instead, roll the rug and wrap it in a sheet or heavy paper to prevent dust from building up on the outside. Don’t use plastic wrap or any other material that could cause any moisture to not dry and turn to mold.
3. Don’t tie the rug roll together with a tight string or rubber band. We all know what our wrists look like when you forget about that rubber band you stored on it! Your rug will be left with a crease, too!
4. Store your rug in an area away from direct sunlight. Just like UV rays can break down lawn furniture left in the sun for too long, those same rays can cause your carpet fibers and backing to break down, as well.
When you need rug cleaning services or rug care advice in Nevada County, call Select Floor Care. We’re your one stop shop for expert rug care and cleaning.
Holiday Floor Care Tips
Posted: November 29, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: carpet cleaning tips, grass valley carpet cleaner, grass valley rug cleaner, nevada citgy rug cleaner, penn valley carpet cleaner, truckee rug cleaner Leave a comment »From November to New Year’s, the holidays are a time of togetherness. While we host holiday parties, have visitors drop by with warm cookies and welcome friends inside for a cup of coffee, our floor coverings can take a beating. After all, homes are made to live in; and inevitably, enjoying your home with loved ones means a mess here and there.
Here are a few tips to keep your carpets, rugs and hardwood clean during the holiday hustle and bustle:
1. Drop the shoes at the door: With rain and snow on the ground, infamous Nevada County mud is sure to make its way into your home sooner or later. To help avoid muddy footprints, ask your family and friends to leave their shoes at the door. Provide a bench to sit on and a shoe rack for safe storage. Worried that your guests might feel uncomfortable ditching their footwear? Of course, the policy is optional, but you’d be surprised how much more relaxed people are in their favorite Santa socks.
2. Arm your home with walk-off mats: If a no-shoes policy isn’t your style, be sure to place walk-off mats at the entryways of your home. These rugs allow for most of the muck on shoes to be left on the easy-to-clean mat, rather than your carpet or favorite oriental rug! For more information on how to use walk off mats, click here.
3. Be prepared for spills: Accidents happen! Hot coffee, chocolatey cocoa and a little bit of your favorite red wine might make their way onto your carpet. Be armed with baking soda to help pull the moisture out of a spill, plenty of clean white rags and a mixture of mild dish soap and warm water to blot up stains. Don’t hesitate to give Select Floor Care a call for stain and spot treatment advice at (530) 477-2782. We’re here to help!
4. Have your carpets cleaned: Whether you’re hosting your company party, or just having a quiet season with the family at home, clean carpets mean a clean, healthy, comfortable home. Besides, you won’t see those mystery spots on your carpet in your Christmas morning pictures if they’re Select clean!
No matter what your holiday plans are, or which ones you celebrate, the Select Floor Care family wishes you a happy, healthy, and clean holiday season!

Rug Maintenance Tips
Posted: November 9, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: grass valley rug cleaner, nevada county rug cleaner, oriental rug cleaning, rug cleaning tips, truckee rug cleaner Leave a comment »Whether your home is covered in wood floors, laminates or linoleum, area rugs can add a cozy touch of comfort, color and style. A high quality area rug that has been properly maintained can be an investment piece for your home that lasts a lifetime. However, it’s important to have a few tips in your hat for rug maintenance.
1. Know your rug: Rugs come in a wide variety of styles, made of various materials that require different courses of care. It’s important to know what kind of rug you have and what home maintenance is and isn’t appropriate. If you are unaware of what type of rug you have; give us a call. As your Grass Valley rug cleaning expert, we can help you identify your rug and develop a maintenance schedule to protect your investment.
2. Keep rugs in an appropriate environment: Ideally, rugs should be used! By placing rugs flat on the floor, in a temperature controlled environment, you’ll reduce the risk of moisture damage that may occur when rugs are stored in a garage, shed or storage unit. If you have a rug that has been neglected in storage, call Select Floor Care to schedule a professional rug cleaning and get your rug ready to be used in the home.
3. Vacuum Regularly: Vacuuming area rugs frequently will help remove dry soils between in-plant rug cleanings. Be careful to not suck up your rug’s fringes, though, as vacuuming can cause damage to your fringes; a vital part of rug construction.
4. Spot clean the right way: When spills and spots occur, consult with Select floor care, the only IICRC-certified rug cleaner in Nevada County, about the best solution and method to use. Using the wrong cleaning solution may cause permanent damage to your rug; so arm yourself with the knowledge you need to prevent permanent stains or color loss.
5. Rotate your rug: To prevent uneven wear patterns, rotate the direction of your rugs on a regular basis; much like you would rotate your mattress!
6. Establish a professional rug cleaning schedule: Just as you care for the carpets throughout your home, regular professional rug cleaning is vital. Work with the experts at Select Floor Care to establish how often your rugs should be cleaned in our plant to maintain the quality and appearance of your rug!
Select Floor Care: A Locally Owned, Family Ran Business
Posted: November 1, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »Although the professional quality of services from providers like carpet cleaners, home repairmen and cable installers is an integral part of running a well maintained home, it begs the question of just who you are letting into your home.
As parents and homeowners, we understand the concerns of having an unknown individual come into your home to clean the carpet. Each of us are familiar with some kind of horror story about an in-home service provider who was less than honest. Perhaps you’re afraid of theft, burglary at a later time, or someone causing harm after being let into your home.
At Select Floor Care, we don’t want to be strangers. If you don’t already know us, please allow us this opportunity to introduce ourselves and the Select Floor Care family to yours. Co-owners Michelle and Barry Phillips are Nevada County natives who purchased Select Floor Care as a carpet cleaning & janitorial service. Since acquiring the business the Phillips’ have expanded to a full service floor care business serving both residential and commercial service. The rest of the staff at Select Floor Care is carefully screened and managed. We require that our staff has a clean criminal record and undergo random drug testing. Our goal is to provide customers with outstanding service from outstanding people. Customers may be familiar with the voice of our Administrative Assistant, Stacey Schaefer. Stacey is a mom of two who has lived in Nevada County for 6 years. With nearly 10 years of administrative experience, Stacey brings a wealth of knowledge to Select Floor Care; and when she’s not at work she’s busy volunteering at her children’s schools and spending time with family.

We promise to treat that space with the same respect we’d expect in our own. As part of our relationship with customers, we want you to know who we are! Rug Fringes Made “New” Again
Posted: October 24, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: area rug cleaning, certified rug cleaner, grass valley rug cleaner, nevada county rug cleaner, rug cleaning, rug cleaning tips, rug fringe cleaning, truckee rug cleaner Leave a comment »In previous posts, we’ve talked about the importance of the fringes of your rug. While many people are under the impression that fringes are simply a decorative after thought by rug makers, the fringes are actually the ends of the rug’s foundation. Believe it or not, those knots at the end of rug fringes play a major part in ensuring that rugs don’t unravel.
While the “Oriental and Area Rugs” section of our website offers tips to rug owners about the importance of rug fringe, clients still wonder how to keep all that fringe clean. It gets stuck in the vacuum, and seems to collect grime from around the room. What starts as a bright white fringe often ends up dull and discolored, greatly reducing the aesthetics of a rug.
Never Fear…Select Floor Care is Here!
There is good news in the battle against dirty rug fringe. As Nevada County’s only IICRC Certified Rug Cleaner, Select Floor Care co-owner Michelle Phillips has the tools and knowledge to help restore dirty fringe back to a near-new luster.
As part of the rug cleaning process, rugs processed in the Select Floor Care cleaning plant on Loma Rica Road in Grass Valley have the fringes cleaned thoroughly before being returned to the owner. After the dry soils have been removed from a rug and the wet cleaning process is complete, the fringes are the last piece of the rug to receive personalized attention; ensuring that the finishing touch of your rug is as clean as possible.
This photo illustrates the effects of professional rug fringe cleaning by Select Floor Care. Note the dark spots and discoloration of the fringe on the left that has not yet been cleaned. Meanwhile, the fringe on the right side of the rug has been cleaned and is a bright, white color. Professional cleaning makes a major impact!
Keeping Fringe Clean At Home
In between professional cleanings, keep your rug fringes as clean as possible by regularly vacuuming the rug and the area of floor around where the rug is placed. Take special care to not run vacuums over the fringe of the rug, as the fringe may become caught and damage the rug, your vacuum or both. Instead, gently run the hose attachment over rug fringes to remove any loose dry soils and maintain a rug cleaning schedule for the long-term “health” of your fringe!
Rug Cleaning: Dry Soil Removal With the Rug Badger
Posted: September 29, 2011 Filed under: Uncategorized Leave a comment »When customers bring a rug into our plant for cleaning by Michelle, our certified rug cleaner and co-owner, we send them away with a parting gift when it’s time to pick up the rug. Although unconventional, that gift is a zip top bag filled with all of the dry soil (dirt!) that was removed from their rug during the cleaning process.
However, many people wonder just how we got all that dirt out of their rug. They’ve been faithfully vacuuming, after all, so how is it that we were able to free so much more dry soil?
It’s All About the Equipment
At Select Floor Care we utilize a machine called the “Rug Badger” to remove the dry soils and dirty sediments that have gathered in area rugs. Instead of pulling contaminants from the rug with suction, like a vacuum, the Rug Badger utilizes the power of thousands of harmonic vibrations per minute to loosen and remove dry soils.
Imagine the vibrations of a jackhammer used to break up concrete. The Rug Badger uses purposeful vibrations in a similar manner, to essentially vibrate the deep-seated soil out of a rug. By including the Rug Badger in out arsenal of rug cleaning equipment, we ensure our customers that as much soil as possible is removed from their area rugs during our in-plant cleaning process.
And We Show You The Proof!
Once the Rug Badger has done it’s work, we collect the dirt that’s removed and bag it for you to see. There’s no denying that this process works once you see just how much dust and debris can be trapped in a rug.
After the Rug Badger has been used to remove dry soils, we move forward with the wet wash process to deliver you a rug that isn’t just clean; it’s Select clean!
