While we host holiday parties, have visitors drop by with warm cookies and welcome friends inside for a cup of coffee, our floor coverings can take a beating. After all, homes are made to live in; and inevitably, enjoying your home with loved ones means a mess here and there.
Here are a few tips to keep your carpets, rugs and hardwood clean during the holiday hustle and bustle:
1. Drop the shoes at the door: With rain and snow on the ground, infamous Nevada County mud is sure to make its way into your home sooner or later. To help avoid muddy footprints, ask your family and friends to leave their shoes at the door. Provide a bench to sit on and a shoe rack for safe storage. Worried that your guests might feel uncomfortable ditching their footwear? Of course, the policy is optional, but you’d be surprised how much more relaxed people are in their favorite Santa socks.
2. Arm your home with walk-off mats: If a no-shoes policy isn’t your style, be sure to place walk-off mats at the entryways of your home. 3. Be prepared for spills: Accidents happen! Hot coffee, chocolatey cocoa and a little bit of your favorite red wine might make their way onto your carpet. Be armed with baking soda to help pull the moisture out of a spill, plenty of clean white rags and a mixture of mild dish soap and warm water to blot up stains. 4. Have your carpets cleaned: Whether you’re hosting your company party, or just having a quiet season with the family at home, clean carpets mean a clean, healthy, comfortable home.
