4 Tips for Heirloom Rug Care

Often, our clients will come to us with an heirloom rug. Rather than having a piece they’ve purchased themselves, they present a rug that has been passed down through generations and has truly become a family heirloom.

But what if the house you’re currently in doesn’t have a space where that rug fits? Or what if you’re just too scared to place the rug on your floor for use? Never fear, we have some helpful heirloom rug care tips!

If you’ll be using the rug in your home:

1.    Call Select Floor Care and schedule a cleaning. Our knowledgeable rug cleaning technicians, will clean and restore the rug to its best possible condition, as well as help you identify the rug and learn more about its origins and proper care.

2.    Place the rug in a low-traffic area. While your heirloom rug may be beautiful and suitable for light use, it’s probably not up to the task of handling all day wear and tear from the dog, muddy kid shoes and your stilettos.

3.    Resist the urge to take an restorative measures yourself. If you notice your heirloom rug begin to fray or snag, call Select Floor Care and allow us to refer you to a professional who can help. Cutting rug fringe, or repairing backing flaws yourself can lead to the rug being completely destroyed. And that’s not what Grandma wanted!

If you’ll be storing the rug for awhile:

1. Store the rug in a temperature and humidity controlled environment. The extreme heat of the attic, or damp darkness of the basement can lead to a breakdown of the rug’s foundational materials or allow mold and mildew to grow in the rug fibers.

2. Avoid folding your rug. Instead, roll the rug and wrap it in a sheet or heavy paper to prevent dust from building up on the outside. Don’t use plastic wrap or any other material that could cause any moisture to not dry and turn to mold.

3. Don’t tie the rug roll together with a tight string or rubber band. We all know what our wrists look like when you forget about that rubber band you stored on it! Your rug will be left with a crease, too!

4. Store your rug in an area away from direct sunlight. Just like UV rays can break down lawn furniture left in the sun for too long, those same rays can cause your carpet fibers and backing to break down, as well.
